Henkel Hooded Poncho

A hooded poncho is so versatile, isn’t it?  I love the simplicity of this one.  Looks great with jeans and t!  I used a worsted weight yarn, but has a slightly thicker feel to other size 4 yarns.  Be aware if you use a thinner size 4, this may run smaller.  I would highly recommend using this yarn, because of it’s bulk and because of all the lovely colors it comes in!  I chose Ivory for the whole thing, but you could also switch colors for the star stitch with its border as well.  It would give the poncho a totally different feel!

I’m thrilled to share this FREE pattern with you!  Don’t forget to share your version and tag me on Facebook MB Stitches and on Instagram MB_Stitches!!

Star Stitch Step by Step

1:  With one loop on the hook, pull one loop up on the next 5 stitches.

2:  Pull through all 6 loops.

3:  pull yarn through to make one more loop.

4:  pull yarn through middle loop that was just formed.

5:  pull yarn through between last 2 stitches in first star

6:  pull yarn through the next 3 stitches (so you have 6 loops on hook again)

7:  Pull through all 6 loops and next star is formed.  Follow directions from step 3.

8:  second row.  Turn work and 2 sc in each ‘hole’ created in previous row.

Crap Stitch

1:  sc going to the right (move backwards)

2:  pull yarn through on the stitch before the one your currently on.  sc.

3: First crab stitch made!

Hood

Lay poncho flat and find the 33rd st from the beginning loop.  (Count to the left) and place a marker.  From the marker, count 6 st to the left  and attach yarn on 7th st.

Row 1:  ch 1.  sc in same ch space.  sc for 48 st.  turn.  (53 st)
Row 2:  ch 2.  dc in same st and dc across. turn.  (53 st)
Alternate these two row until you have 25 total rows.  (you will end on a sc row).  Do not fasten off, pin or gather hood together and turn inside out.  Whip stitch or ss hood closed.  Turn right side out.

Fasten off.

Finishing

Crab stitch all around the outside of the hood.

Tassle

Cut 16 yarn strips at 16.”  Lay flat together.

Cut 6 yarn strips at 16” and lay in the middle of the 12 cut strips.  Fold 16 strips over on top of 6 strips and wrap yarn many times around to fasten the tassel.

Braid the 6 yarn strips and attach to the point of the hood.
